When this couple from Glasgow wanted to transform their bedroom, a key part of the renovation was going to be the installation of some fitted wardrobes. They knew they wanted something that would be completely made to measure in order to perfectly fill the space, whilst also wanting some quality cabinetry that would stand the test of time.
Rather than opt for a fully installed service and pay a small fortune for the privilege, Kenny was happy to take on a DIY project. He describes himself as a 9 on the DIY confidence scale and said "I found the build really straightforward, and my neighbour helped me with some of the trimming pieces."
The wardrobes would comprise of hanging rails, drawers and internal shelving and measured in at 3870mm long and 2740mm high. These would be made up of four wardrobe cabinets with split doors at the top for storage of lesser-used items that didn't need such regular access.
They opted for our 4-Panel Shaker doors in Graphite for a modern finish, with Natural Oak cabinetry.
The wall that they were installing the wardrobes again had no cavity to take insulation, so they installed some PIR installation boards between battens on the surface with an insulated quilt over that to really insulate the bedroom well.
Once the insulation was installed, Kenny was able to make a start on the wardrobes, building the cabinetry and finding that each cabinet took around 20 minutes to assembly by himself. He'd then position them and screw them together.
Internal options
Once these were complete it was time to install the internals, including 8 drawers, 4 hanging rails and 8 internal shelves.
Walls and ceilings were repainted and a new underlay & carpet went down. Kenny's wife Jen took on a project of upcycling a 1960s Stag Minstrel dresser which they bought from a local marketplace website and she finished this to match the wardrobe doors.
Light fittings were resprayed in a brass colour to match the wardrobe handles.
Kenny used lighting from IKEA, with D-line 16mm oak-effect trunking from B&Q to hire the wires. After this it was time to install and level all of the doors and fixing the handles, including drilling for the exact handle positions that the couple wanted.
Kenny said: "I really enjoyed building the wardrobes. Everything was really straightforward and the only fiddly task was ensuring that all the wardrobes lined up and were perfectly vertical - a task made much easier with the superb height adjustable feet and a decent spirit level."
As Kenny states, "In general I found all the materials including fittings of great quality which gave confidence throughout the build. Everything seemed to be thought of down to the easy to remove labels on every panel."
This husband and wife came to Online Bedrooms as they'd had quotes from some of the big companies in the market pre-pandemic and were shocked at the pricing.
Kenny said "we'd had a quote from Hammonds for about £12k for this wardrobe and that was just far too much. I liked the look of your products and as a company you have great reviews on Google so once we'd had our design consultation with and quote from Robin we were happy to go ahead and commit."
This project came to £4988.63 including delivery, a significant saving over the prices they'd had elsewhere.
